Transportation
Calais is the main hub in the communication lines, via train and ferry, between the UK and France, or even the rest of Europe. The Channel Tunnel extends 50 km from Coquelles near Calais in France to Folkestone in England.
Get there
From Dover taking between 45 minutes and 1hr 30; the operators are: Seafrance, P&O, Hoverspeed - operating high speed catamarans.
Basically the fastest way to Calais is by train. A good example is The Shuttle, which runs from Folkestone to the western edge of Calais and takes about 35 minutes (although only about 20 minutes are spent in the tunnel). Another popular train is the Eurostar, running from London, St Pancras, Ebbsfleet and Ashford, which will get you to Calais in less than 1 hour. Other non high speed trains to Calais can be boarded from major cities around France, such as Lille, Boulogne, Dunkirk, Lyon, Marseille and Paris.
Calais is accessed by two auto routes. The A26/E15 serves the centre of France and provides access to Paris, and Southern Europe. The A16/E40 feeds into the Benelux and Northern Europe motorway system and the A16/E402 to Boulogne and Rouen.
Get around
Most people travel by car or on foot around the town. There is, however, a network of buses running from the port to the town’s suburbs and Cite Europe.
